3:32 am - I'm still alive
Week #2 in Germany. Went to Amsterdam for the weekend- had a crazy amount of fun. Work here is going well- makes me want to move here. The people are wonderful and I love being able to do anywhere without a car. I'm a little homesick- but mostly I miss the dog and cats. I haven't been home for a full week since mid-July. Seattle for a little over a week, home for almost a week, vacation for a week, home for a few days, here for 2 weeks.
Hope all is well with everyone out there!

4:11 pm - Phuk Dani Pedrosa
Honestly, I never trusted the silent, emotionless midget.
I am still angry, upset, disappointed, and stunned.
Prior to going to the Czech Republic, I wasn't a huge Nicky Hayden fan. I followed his AMA career as I have been going to AMA races now for YEARS. He became really cocky and while wasn't actually rude to people, acted like the sun rose and set on him.
Obviously, I didn't get to interact with him when he went to MotoGP and watched as him struggle a lot at first- and less as the years past. After seeing the anti-Nicky sentiment in europe and arguing that hard work means as much as talent sometimes (and nobody agreeing with me) I realized the things that Nicky must have overcome this year to be where he was before Estoril.
This year has been a lucky year for Nicky. I fully feel that Valentino is the better rider, (hell I don't think we'll see someone that has the same talent as Valentinos again in my lifetime) but I also feel that Nicky has worked REALLY hard this year to finish well and finish consistantly. To be taken out by your own teammate at a time in the season where it matters most is devistating.

Last weekend for the AMA races @ VIR was SO much fun. I got to meet one of racers I admire- Kevin Schwantz! Yeah, probably not a big deal to most of you moto fans, but with all the events I've been at I've never met him in person before.
The races were all good, except superbike on Sunday which was the 'typical' Mladin show. Mat showed his true colors again this weekend by having a 'grumpy' face when fans wanted autographs and pics with him and was as usual absent from the public eye 99% of the time. On the flip side, Jason DiSalvo was in a lot of pain but took the time after his podium ceremony to sign stuff, have pictures taken, and talk to his fans.
It was fun being there with 2 'newbies' as both my sisters were excited, it made the weekend much more fun to show them around and see things from their eyes.

2:19 pm - July 2,3 cont.
Day Two: groups were even smaller, with around 20 people in the N group....A few people got the 'bump' to Intermediate..although one of the guys who got 'bumped' I'd passed on the brakes, who tried to pass me later but couldn't and once we got to the technical 1/2 of the track couldn't catch me and I never saw him the rest of the session on Sat..funny too 'cause he was on a 600. Made me feel a little better about my skill level, all things considered.

1:56 pm - My track days July 2,3rd @ VIR South
Spent the 4th of July weekend at my usual destination: VIR South for 2 days on the track.
I love these Pirelli SuperCorsas, and I'm still not 100% sure if I'm going to bite the bullet and get another set of SCs next, or if I'm going to test out the pilot powers.
More track talk, pictures to come later

My thoughts for the weekend: MOTO GP/AMA SUPERSTOCK/SUPERBIKE SPOILERS INSIDE IF YOU DON'T ALREADY KNOW ALTHOUGH I'm NOT SURE HOW THAT IS EVEN POSSIBLE!!!!

2:09 pm - Updates

Things are going well, I'm insanely busy at work, which is good. We had a huge off-site meeting and poster presentation/contest and I won!! My presentation: HPV typing of samples from China by GP+ PCR. Which probably means nothing to anyone here. I am lucky because I get a lot of independent research 'on the side' projects that are intellectually interesting and give me good material for posters/publications. I might even get a paper out of this, considering most of the other work I do is confidential and proprietary since it is company product related.

The weekend of 11th-12th I worked the WERA races at Summit Point. This year I got 2 of my little sisters to come out and help at the track with me, and its been a BLAST. Saturday my sister Amy and I worked together as captain and pick up....After the restart of a red-flagged heavyweight novice solo 20, I predicted a bad crash as it as 100+ degrees out and the red flag wasn't a long enough delay for the riders to go to the pits- so they sat on the grid in their leathers for a good 5-7 minutes. Unfortunately I was right. As the leaders were coming towards my turn (not yet my turn) I glanced into the turn before mine and noticed a bike sliding on its side in the middle of the track. The rider (luckily) was on the side of the track...I said to my sister "they need to stop the race" as a bike in the middle of the track is a reason to stop the race...the person in the turn before me wasn't really 'on the ball' however and the next thing I see is bikes and people flying through the air....I waited a few seconds to see if the person who was 'responsible' for that turn would call in for a red flag and when he didn't I did. I am still beating myself up about it because I didn't want to step on someones toes (it wasn't my turn/responsibility and thus not my call to make) but I keep thinking that MAYBE some of the damage could have been minimized if I had called sooner- but HONESTLY when I think about how fast things happen I SERIOUSLY DOUBT the end would have been different. The first crashed bike (and subsequent crashes) were in an odd place in the track..the first crash happened because of a really late, almost saved high-side in a difficult turn. The bike slid a LOOONG way- up a hill into a 'blind' spot for riders picking up speed on a small 'straight'. Its a really fast section of track, and the only reason no one could see the downed bike is because it was over the top of a hill where (almost) no one crashes- so expecting an open track and hard on the gas- 3 other people crashed in one of the most spectacular motorcycle crashes I've witnessed-

2:18 pm - MP3/tech gurus
I want to get my sister who is going into the Peace Corp an MP3 player for Christmas because she is a big music fan and I figure it would be easier to carry an MP3 player than a CD player and lots of CDs.
Originally I was going for the big IPOD- but she may or may not have electricity to recharge it, so I need suggestions on MP3 players that
a.) run on batteries
b.) Have lots of storage (she has LOTS of CDs(200+), and while she doesn't have to load them all-the more the better)
c.) Are decent quality

THANKS!!!!!!!

Haven't been on LJ much, I'm really busy catching up at work and still not 100% better from the surgery. Recovering is a lot slower than I thought it would be.

Thanks to Banzai for This post which sums up a lot of what I'm feeling right now.

Also got some really, really great news about an LJ friend. I'm sending all my good thoughts and wishes to you two..

7:24 am - Barber ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
First, let me say that if you have never been to Barber, its definitely worth the trip. Its located outside Birmingham Alabama- so quite a drive for most of you folk but let me tell you its DEFINITELY A MUST RIDE TRACK

I left the DC area during rush hour traffic Thurs night- with my goal being Roanoke, VA (approx 4 hr drive, which took almost 6 hrs). We left Roanoke Friday morning @ 8:30am and got to Barber at 4:30pm (3:30pm local time)- enough time to tour the Barber Vintage Motorcycle Museum- which was WELL WORTH the $10 admission...Holy CRAP the motorcycles they have in there!!!! They had a Britten!!!. (Shhhhh but I touched it...I had to!). There were only something like 10 ever made! They also have a Bimota Tesi..
The museum has its own machine shop, paint shop, and full time technicians and restorers to work on bikes that come in. Its the largest privately owned motorcycle collection in the world (and probably the best maintained-these bikes were SPOTLESS). Among a few of the 700+ motorcycles in this place: 1989 Honda RC30, a 1989 Ducati 851, a 1989 Yamaha 0W01, a 1975 Laverda 750, a 1980 Laverda Jota Formula 1000, Dick Mann's 1962 Matchless G50; a 1990 Gilera SP1; a 1951 Vincent Comet, a 1927 SS80 Brough Superior, a 1956 Douglas Dragonfly, a 1975 Hercules Rotary, several BSA Gold Stars, a 1955 Vincent Black Knight, Dave Sadowski's 1990 Daytona-winning Vance & Hines...
Scroll to the bottom of Thispage for a picture of the basement of the museum...those bikes look like toys in cubby holes- don't they? They aren't- they are real motorcycle stashed in holes in the wall.. vintage bikes, modern bikes, rare expensive modern bikes- some with 0 miles on them.

10:13 am
The last race weekend of the year at Summit was filled with both the best of racing and the worst.
Its always good to be at the track among friends, but we had another fatality on Sunday.
Turn 5-6 (the same transition as the last fatality- but I was in Turn 7 this time). I didn't see what happened as I was facing downstream in 7- but apparently the guy who died went down in late 5 and another rider hit him (which was unavoidable from what I understand). I was the 3rd or 4th person to the scene. The rider was talking and complaining of pain and not being able to breathe-I figured he had a collapsed lung, etc. I again helped set up the LZ for the chopper since I had a complete melt down the first LZ after MY accident (I still blame those a**hole MD state police medics for making that experience HORRID) It still makes me anxious and upset as soon as the chopper gets close enough to the ground to start kicking up debris. Apparently his heart stopped beating in the chopper and they weren't able to get it started again....
Its been a rough year for motorcycle racing..a rough year for motorcycle riders in general.

Still feel like a truck ran through my head with this horrible head cold :(

Weather sucks, not looking forward to my surgery (at all), but I am looking forward to Barber this weekend!!!

1:49 pm - weekend plans.
Another busy weekend planned. Will be at the track for the last motorcycle race event of the season at Summit Point with WERA. Weather looks good for the weekend.
NEXT weekend I'll be in Birmingham at Barber, the weekend after that @ VIR for the rescheduled AMA races.

Still haven't heard from J if he is or isn't back in the country if he is or isn't o.k.

My mechanic is planning on picking me up on the way to VIR in a few weeks so we'll get to hang out some before my surgery.

4:11 pm - Chipotle
A favor to all of you with 'connections' does anyone know where I can get Chipotle t-shirts? SPECIFICALLY the red t-shirt that says "Burrito Lady"?

The reason is a coworker is getting married and she was ALWAYS singing that song/commercial. She got us all into singing it and various members of our group actually left the jingle on our work voice mails.

We thought it would be cute to get her that shirt for her shower (I saw the shirt on a Chipotle employee not too long ago), but can't find anywhere to buy it and was told at Chipotle that they don't sell them.
